Chapter 31: First Snow
"You don't have to say anything," I said. "You can just say yes."
"What if she asks me something hard?"
"Then you say the true thing."
"What if the true thing is weird?"
"Glory," Gunnar said from the stove. "Every true thing in this house is weird."
She threw a dish towel at him.
Then she went upstairs and didn't come down until dinner.
I heard her through the floor all week, practicing to the wall.
On Thursday morning the sky over the valley was low and white and heavy.
We drove to town in two trucks, because there were ten of us now.
The three new kids came too.
The girl with the scar held the little one's hand the whole way up the courthouse steps.
I thought the courtroom would be empty.
It wasn't.
The old mechanic was in the second pew, in a tie that was older than me.
The pack mothers were behind him. The cashier from the store. The enforcers, in clean shirts, sitting up straight.
The eldest of the council sat in the front row with her purse on her knees, since she couldn't bring the gavel.
