Chapter 24: The Midwinter Gathering
Fern's POV
Margo asked to see me the day before the Gathering, and I went.
The Beta walked me up the stairs of the packhouse himself, past a warden posted at the end of the hall.
The Luna's rooms had been my rooms for five years.
Now they were cream, every wall of them, with a quilt on the bed that I had never owned.
Margo sat in the window seat in my green robe, with a mug of tea going cold in her hands.
She looked thinner.
She didn't look sorry.
"You came," she said.
"You asked."
"I wanted to see your face when you heard how it works." She smiled. "The accuser kneels."
"What?"
"Old law, Fern. Anyone who brings a charge against a pack member at a Gathering makes it on the Moon Stone. On their knees. If the pack believes you, you're a Luna with a case. If they don't, you're a woman on a rock."
She took a sip of tea.
"You'll have to kneel there," she said softly. "In front of two hundred, with sleet coming down. The same stone you lost her on."
Anger came up in me and I held it still.
"I know it hurts," said Margo. "That's why I thought you should hear it from a friend."
"We were never friends."
"I thought we were close."
"You made me a salve," I said. "You taught me to say thank you for it."
Her face didn't change.
"Then I suppose I'll see you on the Stone," she said.
I went down the stairs alone.
Kurt was waiting for me outside, leaning against his truck in the dusk with his collar up.
