Chapter 9: Eight Weeks Six Days
"Then that's where we start," Wyatt said.
"Not yet," I said. "First I need something they can't call a lie."
On Friday I went back to work.
My truck was in a scrapyard on the river road, so Wyatt drove me across the bridge himself.
He wouldn't let his Beta do it.
He parked in the far corner of the Larch Falls County Hospital lot, where he could see both doors, and turned off the engine.
"You're going to sit here for twelve hours?" I said.
"I've sat in worse places."
To the humans in Larch Falls, Redmoor and Ironpine were just two big ranching families across the river who didn't get along.
That was all they needed to know.
Inside, the emergency room smelled like bleach and burnt coffee.
The charge nurse looked up from the desk and took in my bruised wrist and the seat belt mark showing above my scrub top.
"Car accident," I said, before she could ask.
"You should be home."
"I don't have one right now."
She looked at me a second longer.
Then she handed me a stack of charts.
At two in the morning, when the waiting room was quiet, I went down the hall to ultrasound.
The tech on nights was a woman I'd shared a hundred vending machine dinners with.
I told her what I needed.
She didn't ask a single question.
She turned the lights down, squeezed cold gel on my belly, and moved the wand slowly.
The screen was gray and grainy.
Then it wasn't.
A small curled shape.
In the middle of it, a flicker.
"There's your heartbeat," the tech said softly. "One sixty-eight. Strong."
I couldn't speak.
She measured, clicked, measured again.
"Eight weeks, six days," she said. "Due date May eighth."
She printed it.
The printout came out warm, with the date and time across the top and the hospital's name across the bottom, and the measurements in a neat column on the side.
