Chapter 16: The Buyer's Yard

Kari's POV

I didn't go alone.

I thought about it for as long as it took Soren to read the text.

Then I took the phone out of his hand and put it face down on the quilt.

"He wants me to walk into a yard in Havre by myself," I said.

"And you want to go," Soren said.

"I want to see the scale.

"I don't want to see Kjell."

"Then I'll go with you," he said.

"No."

He looked at me.

"If you walk in, he'll say I brought my keeper," I said.

"He'll say it to the buyer and to the bank.

"He wants us split.

"He wants you angry, and me alone."

"You think he'd hurt you?" Soren said.

"I think he'd ruin me," I said.

"That's his way.

"He touched my arm in a yard to see what you'd do."

Soren's jaw worked.

I put my hand on his chest.

"I'm going with someone he won't count," I said.

By eight that morning I was parked at the foot of the Ness lane with the heater on high.

Dagny Holloran came out of her cottage on her cane, in her good wool coat and a hat with a pin.

She stood looking at my truck.
