Chapter 17: Her Father's Belt
I had my father's work belt in my hand when he came through the trailer door.
It was the old brown leather one, two inches wide, with a brass buckle and thirty years of grease worked into it.
I had kept my jeans up with the canvas one since the funeral.
This one had hung on a nail by the stove, and I had never put it on.
Soren stopped inside the door with snow on his shoulders.
He looked at the belt, and then at me.
"Lock it," I said.
He locked it.
It was Wednesday, and I had told him on the phone to come at nine.
I had told him nothing else.
He stood with his hat in his hand and a day of potato dirt still in the creases of his knuckles, and he waited.
"Take your coat off," I said.
He did.
"Boots."
He bent and unlaced them.
I watched the long line of his back, and the scar on his ribs showing where his shirt rode up, and my mouth went dry.
"Shirt."
He pulled it over his head.
The woodstove had the room warm, and the lamp was low.
I walked around him once, slowly, with the belt trailing from my fingers.
His breathing had gone ragged by the time I came back to his front.
"I've made up my mind about something," I said.
"What?"
"I want to hold you still."
His eyes went dark.
"I want you where I put you," I said.
"And I want you to let me."
"Kari," he said, low.
"Yes."
I took his wrist and led him to the bed.
It was a narrow double with an iron frame, my father's, and the headboard was a row of vertical bars.
"Lie down," I said.
