Chapter 18: The Bite Place
Dagny's porch smelled of cat and woodsmoke, and she had a quilt over her knees and a pot of coffee on the rail.
"Sit," she said.
I sat in the other rocker.
Soren stood at the porch step with his back to the yard and his eyes on his boots.
It was Friday evening, the day before the harvest supper.
"I have a bone to pick with the two of you," Dagny said.
"You've been seen."
"Seen," I said.
"At the trailer.
"The potato farmer's wife saw his tractor parked at the end of your drive at four in the morning.
"The pack knows.
"I'd like you to know that I've told them it's none of their business."
Soren's ears went red.
"Grandmother," he said.
"I've lived eighty-four years, and I've never seen two people so determined to be unhappy in private," Dagny said.
She looked at me with her blue eyes.
"Tomorrow the barn will be full.
"The bank's man will be there, and Kjell will be there, and the whole of the co-op.
"I need you to be certain."
"Of what?" I said.
"That you want him," said Dagny.
"I'm not asking for the sake of the land.
"I'm asking for yours."
I looked at Soren.
He had lifted his head.
I saw how he stood, like a man at the edge of a drop, waiting to be told whether it was a floor.
"I haven't said yes," I said.
"I know what you haven't said," said Dagny.
"I'm asking what's in your chest."
"I'll tell him tomorrow night," I said.
