Chapter 18: What Margaret Left

Hazel arrived at eight the next morning with a Council officer and a cream envelope.

She put it on the kitchen island between my tea and Torin's coffee.

"Margaret's lawyer brought it to the gate at dawn," she said. "He says she told him to deliver it the day after the bond was cut. Not a day sooner."

The seal was Margaret's signet in red wax.

I felt sick looking at it.

"It's addressed to you," Torin said.

"It's addressed to the Alpha," Hazel said. "That's the part that makes me want to burn it."

She broke the seal.

She read it standing, with her jaw tight.

Then she read it aloud, in a flat voice, because she knew we would not let her keep it.

"My dear Hazel. If you are reading this, you have the seat, and I have lost. Congratulations. I know you were always the clever one."

"Skip the compliments," Torin muttered.

"The landing rail on the great staircase at the Alpha house," Hazel read. "Three weeks ago I had the carpenter cut the bolts on the inside and fill the holes with wax and paint. The rail looks sound. It will hold a hand. It will not hold a body."

My mouth went dry.

"The Luna's welcome is held on that landing," Hazel read. "I made sure the pack would hold one when Joanna took her place. If Poppy failed, the stairs would not."

She stopped.

"There's a last line."

"Read it," I said.

"I would rather bury my own blood than see a stranger's child take its place. Burn this or don't. It makes no difference now."

The kitchen was silent.

My hands had gone cold.

"Mom," the pup said in my head, in a very small voice. "That's where I died. The landing. The rail came off in my... in your hands. You were holding me."
