I pulled the nail out of the door and opened the envelope standing in the frost.
One page.
Mirren,
I'll sign the charter at the pack hall tomorrow at noon, in front of the pack.
You don't have to come.
The commander will bring the papers.
I'm not asking for anything.
I heard you.
I'll hear that word for the rest of my life.
I'm sorry for the door.

That was all.
No test in it anywhere.
I read it twice.
Then I folded it back into the envelope and put it in the pocket of Emrys's flannel.
When I turned around, he was standing on the porch in his jeans and nothing else, with two mugs of coffee.
He'd found the tin in the kitchen. The one Gwenna knew about.
"You were gone," he said.
"I was getting coffee."
"From the stable."
"I have a system."
He came down the steps and handed me a mug.
He saw the envelope corner in the pocket. He didn't ask.
"He's signing," I said. "Tomorrow at noon."
Emrys nodded, his breath steaming in the cold.
"Good," he said. "Do you want me there?"
