Chapter 14: Booked

"That's me," I said.

"You're under arrest for assault in the second degree. Turn around, please, ma'am."

Ben stepped in front of me.

He didn't touch anyone. He just stood there in his scrubs, a full head taller than both of them, and didn't move.

"She was the one who got hit," he said. "There's video. There's a hospital record."

"Ben," I said. "It's okay."

The cameras were outside the glass, and I wasn't giving them a vet in handcuffs too.

I turned around.

"Her bag," Ben's sister said, and handed it to the officer. "Her phone's in it. Don't lose the phone."

She looked at me while she said it.

I understood. The clip was on the phone.

The old woman stood up from the bench and put on her winter coat, slowly, one arm at a time.

"I'll walk out with her," she said.

"Ma'am, that's not..."

"I'm eighty years old," she said. "Arrest me too."

So they walked me out with an old woman holding my elbow and a three-legged pit bull limping beside us on a leash.

The cameras went off.

"Daisy! Did you stab your brother?"
