The bakery on Ferry Street smelled of butter and hot sugar, and Egon Tarvik was sitting in the window with a cup of tea.
Oren stopped in the door.
He had come out for lemons.
Pip had been with him, and then Pip was gone, with the shopping bag still swinging on the pavement outside.
"Please," Egon said, and gestured with one finger. "Sit."
"Where's Pip?"
"Enjoying a short drive." Egon smiled. "He is quite safe. As is the thing you are carrying."
The floor tilted.
Oren sat.
His hands had gone cold under the table.
"How did you know?"
"I counted." Egon stirred his tea. "You have been sick for a week. You pushed the fish away. And you put your hand over your stomach at dinner. I am old, Oren, not stupid."
"What do you want?"
"What I have always wanted. A quiet end to a small problem." Egon took a sip. "I have been patient. Three weeks of Benedikt Dreyer in the papers, and still he lives. I must conclude you are having second thoughts."
"I'm having a baby."
"Yes." Egon set the cup down. "That will complicate things for you. It need not for me."
