Two blue lines.
Oren sat on the edge of Ilse's bathtub with the plastic stick in his hand and looked at them until they stopped swimming.
Benedikt crouched in front of him.
Ilse stood in the doorway with her arms crossed and her eyes suspiciously bright.
"Well," Oren said.
"Well," said Ilse.
"I'm pregnant."
"Yes."
Oren stared at the stick.
"I'm going to have a baby."
"Yes, dear."
Oren's voice climbed.
"I'm twenty-four, I don't have a window, and a man wants to kill my boyfriend."
"Mate," Benedikt said.
"I told you, after Egon."
"I'm correcting the record."
Oren started to laugh.
It went wrong halfway, and he put the heel of his hand to his mouth, and Benedikt's arms were around him before the first sob broke.
"It's all right," Benedikt said into his hair. "It's all right. I have you."
"I'm scared."
"I know."
"I want it." Oren's voice was muffled in his shoulder. "I didn't think I'd ever get to want anything. I want it so much."
