Benedikt knew before the boy did.
He had smelled it the night before, under the lemon and the sugar and the sweat.
It was a new note in Oren's scent, so faint he had told himself it was the tart.
It was not the tart.
It was warm and milky and sweet.
It was the smell of someone else, very small, curled inside a person he loved.
He knelt on the bathroom tile now with a wet cloth in his hand, and held Oren's hair back, and said nothing.
"I'm fine," Oren croaked.
"You're not."
"It's the butter. I ate too much butter."
Benedikt wrung out the cloth.
"Yes."
"Stop looking at me like that."
Oren squinted at him.
"Like what?"
"Like I'm made of glass."
Benedikt wiped his mouth with the cloth, gently.
"Drink some water," he said. "Go back to bed. I'll bring tea."
Oren frowned, suspicious, but his face was green and he was too tired to argue.
He crawled back under the covers.
Benedikt went down the stairs, past the kitchen, and out onto the deck.
