Chapter 8: Back Door

On Thursday night somebody knocked at my back door, three soft knocks, the way we used to knock when we were nine.

I had a dishrag in one hand and a letter from the Booster Club in the other.

I opened the door, and Brynja stood on the step in a gray sweatshirt with her hood pulled up.

"You can't be here," I said.

"I know."

"Then why are you?"

"Because I'm scared," she said, and her chin shook. "And you're the only person I've ever been scared in front of."

I should have shut the door.

My father's kitchen smelled of coffee and sawdust, and the light over the stove was yellow.

I stepped back and she came in and stood against the counter with her arms around her middle.

She was thinner than she had been a week ago.

I did not offer her a chair.

"Eirik hasn't come home since Saturday," she said.

"Since the wedding."

"There was a ceremony," she said. "In the backyard. Eleven people and the pastor and a tent. He said the vows and he signed the paper and then he drove his mother's car to his mother's house, and he's slept in his old bedroom every night since."

"That's not my problem."

"I know that too."

She laughed, once, and it came out wet.

"I'm not asking for your sympathy. I'm telling you what's going on. Birgit calls me every morning at seven to ask what I ate. She asked me for the name of my doctor. She asked my due date three times. She's already picked out a crib."

"She wants the baby."

"She wants the baby," Brynja said. "I don't know what she wants with me."
