Chapter 7: The Lake

Elias pulled into an empty lakefront lot and cut the engine.

Gray water ran out to the horizon, and the wind rocked the SUV a little on its springs.

"Out," he said. "You need air."

"I need to know what you heard."

"You'll get it. Walk first."

We went down to the rocks.

I was shaking, and I didn't think it was the cold.

"The mail," I said. "He went to the mailbox every day at three, before I got home from school. I thought it was sweet."

Elias stood beside me with his hands in his coat pockets.

"In our second year he moved the bank to his name," I said. "I'd overdrawn by eighty dollars. He laughed about it and said he'd take care of it, and I thanked him."

"Rochelle."

"I thanked him!"

I picked up a flat stone and threw it at the lake as hard as I could.

It skipped twice and sank.

I threw another, and another, until my shoulder ached and my cut palm burned under the tape.

Elias didn't say a word, and he didn't stop me.

When I ran out of stones I stood with my hands hanging.

"Five years," I said. "I made him dinner every night. I picked his mother up from church. And he sat there and let me thank him."

"You didn't do anything wrong."

"I handed him everything."

"He took it," Elias said. "That's his, not yours."

I turned around.

He was closer than I expected, and he wasn't looking at the lake.
