My father didn't look at the folder.
He looked at Brent, for a long time.
"Sit down, Mr. Stratton."
"I'd rather stand."
"In my house you sit."
Brent sat.
My father turned the folder around with one finger and read the page inside.
I could see it from where I stood.
A figure, typed in bold. Twenty million dollars.
Under it, Brent's signature, a little shaky from the left-handed sling.
"This is a great deal of money," my father said.
"It's most of what I have that isn't Stratton stock."
"And you think I sell my daughter."
"I think that's how it works here," Brent said. "She told me. The rule. The elders. The dowry."
My father closed the folder.
"Tomorrow is the lunch before the wedding," he said. "Every Caruso on this island will be at my table."
"Come at one. Bring your folder."
"Why?"
"Because an offer like this," my father said, "my family should hear."
Brent looked at me.
I didn't help him.
He came at one.
The tables were set in the front courtyard under the old fig tree, with the gate open to the road.
