Chapter 4: Look at My Shoes

I slept eleven hours in a bed with a lock on the door.

The first thing I thought when I woke was the empty drawer in my apartment.

Of everything in that place, someone had wanted only the paper that proved I was Dario's wife.

Two of his guards stood outside my door, and I did not ask what that meant.

At noon I put my uniform back on and went down to the staff dining room, because I had a shift that night and a rule that said so.

The room was long and loud and smelled like coffee and fried onions.

Every head turned when I walked in.

A woman with red hair and a cocktail tray under her arm slid into the seat across from me before I had even sat down.

"You're her," she said. "The one who slapped Mr. Corvino in front of four men and walked out alive."

"I'm not sure who I am."

"I'm Dee Goodwin. Cocktail floor. I've worked here six years, and I've wanted to do that for five and a half."

She pushed a plate of eggs at me.

"Eat. You look like a wet napkin."

I laughed, for the first time in weeks, and the sound surprised me.

Dee leaned close.

"Everybody's saying you're his secret wife," she whispered. "The girls on nights have a pool. I had you as a cousin."

"I'm his wife."

"Well, I lose twenty bucks and win a friend."

She was still grinning when the double doors banged open.

Rocco Corvino walked in with six men from the VIP floor behind him.

He stopped at the end of my table and looked me up and down.

"So this is her," he announced, loud enough for the whole room. "The wife who takes half a million a month from my cousin and tells the neighbors she's starving."
