Chapter 5: One and a Half Million
The private bank had marble floors and no customers.
A woman in a gray suit met us at the door and led us into a back office without a single question.
She knew Dario by name.
She looked at me and hesitated.
"This is Mrs. Corvino," he said. "The account holder. She is here in person."
The woman's eyebrows went up.
"Then who," she said slowly, "was here at nine o'clock this morning?"
She turned her screen toward us.
A grainy video showed a woman in a scarf and big sunglasses at the teller window.
She was my height.
She slid a folded paper across the counter, signed a slip, and walked out with a cashier's check.
"She had a marriage certificate and a driver's license," the banker said. "The license had Mrs. Corvino's name. The photograph was poor, but the signature matched our card."
"That's not my face," I said.
"No, ma'am."
"Whose license was it?"
"A real one, with your name and your date of birth." The banker folded her hands. "Mrs. Corvino, I'm afraid I have to be honest. Your account has been paid out in the same way every month since June."
She laid the statements out one by one.
Each month, five hundred thousand dollars came in from Dario's holding company.
Each month, five hundred thousand dollars went out the same week by cashier's check.
Each check was signed by me.
And each check was cashed by *L. Hatch, authorized agent.*
I picked up the first one with a shaking hand.
My signature sat on the line, round and neat.
It was the signature I used on every blue-flagged page Lowell had ever pushed across my table.
