Chapter 6: The Safe

The safe was behind a painting in Dario's office on the third floor.

It was not locked.

The door hung open an inch, the way a door hangs when someone wants it found.

Dario pulled it wide with two fingers.

Inside there was no cash and no gun.

There was one thick envelope, and it had my name on the front in Lowell's neat handwriting.

*For Mrs. C, in case she asks.*

Dario slid the contents onto the desk.

Photographs.

Twenty of them, glossy and printed on good paper.

In every single one, I stood at the door of my apartment in Henderson, and a tall young man stood in the doorway with me.

In one he had a hand on my shoulder.

In another my head was thrown back, laughing, and he was holding a wrench.

I put my fingertips on the desk to keep from falling.

The date was stamped in the corner of every print.

*June 14, 11:02 p.m.*

Dario did not speak.

He had gone pale in a way I had not seen before, a gray, closed look around the mouth.

"I saw these in June," he said. "Lowell brought them to me in a car outside your building. He told me you had a friend, and that you had asked him to keep me away."

"A friend," I said.

"A man at your door at eleven at night."

I picked up the photograph with the wrench.

"He's the landlord's son. He's nineteen, and he's engaged to a girl who works at the nail salon."

Dario's eyes closed.

"On June fourteenth my kitchen pipe burst," I said. "Water came out of the wall. I called the landlord and his son came with a wrench and a bucket. I was in my robe because it was eleven at night and I was on my knees in a puddle."
