Chapter 9: Mine Again

"Two million dollars," Rocco said, and tipped his head at the elevator behind us. "Cash, Mrs. Corvino. Sign what I send over on Monday morning, and you can take the baby and leave Nevada with a smile."

I pulled my collar closed with one hand.

"And if I don't?"

"Then the next man who finds you in a corridor won't be drunk."

Dario moved.

I put a hand flat on his chest before he could take the first step.

"Get out of my house," I told Rocco.

He laughed in my face.

"Your house." He shook his head at Dario. "You haven't told her yet, have you? Cousin, that is cold."

"Out," said Dario, in a voice I did not know.

Two guards took Rocco by the elbows, and he went, whistling.

The doors closed behind him.

The penthouse was silent, and Dario stood in front of me with blood drying on his knuckles.

"Rule four," I said. "What haven't you told me?"

He shut his eyes.

"Tomorrow," he said. "In daylight, with the papers in front of you. I swear on our child. Tonight I'll answer anything else."

"Anything?"

"Anything."

"Then answer this."

I took his bloody hand and led him down the hall to the bedroom.

The lamp was on, and the bed was enormous.

I turned in front of him and looked up.

"Do you want me?" I said. "Or the version of me in the photographs, or the one who took your money?"

"You," he said hoarsely. "Only you. I've wanted you every night for three months and called it hate."

"Say the other part."

His face worked.

"Lowell told me you said you wanted the money and not me," he said. "Smiling. I believed it, because it was easier than the other thing. I lay here with that sentence every night."

I put my hands on his shirt.

"Then I'll tell you one back," I said. "I want you. I wanted you every night too."

I undid the first button with a shaking hand.

Then the second.

His chest rose and fell under my fingers, and he stood still and let me.

"Rule two," he said, and his voice cracked on the laugh.
