Chapter 10: Refund

Vicky's POV

The hospital advocate's PDF had landed in my inbox at six that morning, and I had not opened it, because I was afraid of what Bree had put in writing.

The sales manager met me at nine in the back office of the dealership, with the blinds down and a tray of bad coffee.

He was a heavy, tired man with a mustache, and he kept glancing out at the lot.

"I wouldn't normally do this," he said. "But the video's got my wife asking questions."

"What did you find?"

He turned his monitor around.

It was a spreadsheet, and half the rows were highlighted yellow.

"Since April, Dillon has written up eleven customer deposits that never reached my books. About twelve thousand dollars. He'd tell people the car was on hold, take the check, and keep it."

"And you didn't notice?"

"I noticed in June. I was about to call the police. Then the money showed up."

"Who paid it?"

He opened a folder of scanned slips.

"Cashier's checks. Every one. Bought at a branch across town, with her name as the remitter."

"Bree Danner."

"I figured she was his girlfriend. Then I saw your video and thought, huh."

"She isn't his girlfriend."

"No," he said slowly. "I'd say she's his boss."

I sat very still.

For three years I had thought Bree was my friend who was good to Dillon.

She had been the one who introduced us.

I had never once asked why a florist with a part-time shop had twelve thousand dollars to cover a car salesman's thefts.

"Why was she covering for him?" I said.

"I don't know. But a man who steals and is bailed out that neatly doesn't run the show."

I looked at the slips.

All of them were dated on Tuesdays.

Bree did her paperwork on Tuesdays.

I had known that for ten years, and had never once thought of it as a pattern.
