My Brother Bet I'd Be Dead by Spring, So I Made My Ruin the Strongest March in the Realm novel · Chapter 28 of 32
Chapter 28: Two of Three
The Lord of the West March came into the Counting House at noon with his falcon on his fist and the treasurer at his elbow.
He'd come because Enora had carried him a note at his lodging.
It said I would show him who burned his villages, and he could bring anyone he liked.
The Counting House was one long room under the palace roof, with high windows and twelve long desks.
At every desk a clerk sat on a stool with a pen.
When I walked in, every pen stopped.
The old head clerk stood up at his high desk by the door.
He'd taught me to rule a page when I was fourteen and too proud to ask.
"Maela," he said, and then he caught himself. "My lord."
"Maela will do in here," I said.
At the third desk from the window, a thin young clerk had my old stool.
He went red to the ears when he saw me look at it.
I'd eaten bread and cheese beside these men at their desks every noon for ten years.
The Lord of the West March looked around the room.
"Well, lady?" he said. "I came. Who burned my villages?"
