Chapter 30: The Deciding Voice

I stood up out of my father's chair.

Nine faces watched me do it.

Tanguy leaned back in the king's chair with his ringed hands folded, waiting to see if I'd prove him right.

"The Warden votes to set the crown prince aside," I said.

Nobody breathed.

"The council has decided," the chancellor said. "The crown prince is set aside as heir."

He wrote it in the council's book, and the scratch of his pen was the only sound in the room.

Tanguy didn't move.

His smile stayed on his face a moment longer than his eyes did.

"And now the throne goes to a boy and a council," he said. "And the council goes to you."

"No," I said. "Hear the rest of it."

I looked down the table at the eight of them.

"The king's younger son is heir," I said. "Until he's twenty, the council rules for him, all eight of you."

"The Warden takes no seat in that," I said. "I vote when you split, the way the law says. No other time."

"I'm going home to Penhal," I said. "If you need me, the King's Road is open. I built it."
