Chapter 7: Not a Penny

Lloyd Hollister was in the lobby of Reeve Partners at eight on Friday morning, in the same dark suit, holding a long white envelope.

He had no receptionist to stop him, so he came straight to my desk.

"Five minutes," he said.

"You have two."

He sat down in the chair across from me without being asked and put the envelope on my blotter.

"Open it."

I didn't.

"It's a cashier's check for two million dollars," he said. "Your lease paid for three years. Your insurance paid for as long as you like. A letter of reference you could frame."

"For what?"

"For signing what you've always signed, tonight, and for telling the papers my son's proposal was a misunderstanding."

"Which part was the misunderstanding?" I asked. "The ring, or the twelve years?"

His heavy jaw didn't move.

"Everyone who has ever walked away from my family has taken something with them, Ms. Whitby. Take it. It's cleaner."

"Your son sent me champagne."

"My son is a fool about you," Lloyd said. "I am not."

I picked up the envelope and held it out to him.

"No," I said.

"You haven't thought about it."

"I thought about it for exactly as long as it took you to say two million." I kept the envelope in the air between us. "Every number you've offered me today is a number you chose. I'd like to know what the real one is."

He looked at me for a long time, and his hand tightened on the envelope.
