Chapter 8: Do Not Explain

I got to the lawyer's office forty minutes early.

It was on the fortieth floor of a building on LaSalle, behind a glass door with gold letters, and the door was unlocked.

The lobby was dark.

There was no receptionist, only a lamp on a desk and the low sound of a man's voice from the room down the hall.

I knew the voice.

I stood still.

"She won't be bought," Porter said.

He was on speaker.

I could hear the tinny echo of a second voice, older, dry.

"Your father thinks two million would do it."

"My father doesn't understand her. She sent the check back. She'd rather be right than rich, and that's the problem."

"Then she has to sign tonight."

"She'll sign," Porter said. "She always signs. Twelve years, she's never once read it."

The older voice laughed softly.

"That is the whole arrangement."

"She thinks it's a tax form. She thinks I'm doing her a favor by handling her paperwork." Porter's voice dropped, and there was something almost fond in it. "She's never asked what's in it, because she trusts me."

My hand was on the wall, and I didn't remember putting it there.

"And the relationship?" the lawyer asked. "The secrecy. Was that Lloyd's idea?"

"Mine," Porter said. "Dad wanted her out of the picture. I told him I'd keep her where I could see her and keep her quiet. If anyone at the office had known she was mine, somebody would have asked who she was. Somebody would have pulled her file. Somebody would have asked why her name is on that page."
