Chapter 9: Management Mistake

The thirty-first floor was dark except for one glass office at the end.

Tobias was inside with his jacket off and his sleeves rolled to the elbow, reading a stack of paper with a pencil in his teeth.

He took the pencil out when I came in.

"You're early for someone who was supposed to be at a dinner."

"I went. I didn't stay."

I put my phone on his desk with the first photograph open.

"What am I looking at?" he asked.

"My signature, every August, for twelve years, on a page I never read."

He read the photograph for a long time.

He scrolled to the second page.

Then the third.

When he looked up, his face had changed.

It was very still, and he was holding something back on purpose.

"Have you read these?"

"I read the folder's tab. I took the photos and left. I heard him say it, Tobias. He said I'd never read it. He said he kept me secret so nobody would ask why my name was on it."

"Sit down."

"I don't want to sit."

"Then stand there." He put the phone down. "I need to verify something against the public record before I say a word. I could be wrong, and I'm not going to hand you a guess."

"Tell me what you think."

"No."

"Tobias."

"Not until I'm sure." His voice was gentle, and completely immovable. "You've had twelve years of a man deciding what you were allowed to know. I won't do that to you for one night. But I won't hand you a half-fact either."
