Chapter 30: The Bell
I didn't say anything.
I couldn't.
I turned around with the phone still at my ear and looked at the back table.
Every face there was looking at mine.
The grandmother put her hand over her mouth.
"Heidi?" the doctor said. "Did you hear me?"
"I heard you."
"Her counts are perfect. Your cells are doing all the work now." His voice went rough for a second. "Bring her up to seven on Monday. I believe there's a bell."
I put the phone down on the counter.
"None," I said to the shop. "Not one cell."
The dad with the toddler made a noise I'd never heard a grown man make.
The toddler woke up and screamed, delighted, because everyone else was screaming.
On the video, the mom across the hall dropped her phone, and all we could see was her kitchen ceiling and her yelling.
Matt didn't say anything.
He put both arms around me from the side and held on, his chin on the top of my head, and I felt him shaking.
Upstairs, a door banged.
Clara came down the back stairs in her mask with a couch cushion still in her arms.
"What? What happened? Why is everybody crying?"
I went and knelt on the bottom step in front of her.
"The doctor called," I said. "About your blood."
"Is it bad?"
"It's done-done."
She dropped the cushion.
On Monday, July 6, at ten in the morning, we walked back through the double doors on seven.
Clara wore a new crown with ten points instead of seven.
She'd made it herself, at the kitchen table, with a ruler.
The whole hall was waiting.
Nurses from the day shift and nurses who had come in on their day off.
New families in the glass rooms, faces I didn't know, waving through the doors.
The girl who only ate pink things, home for months now, back in a pink dress with her mother.
