Chapter 9: Fog in the Kills

Ettore took one step toward his underboss.

I put my hand flat on his arm.

He stopped.

The underboss saw that, and his eyes narrowed.

"How much was the blood money?" I asked.

The underboss kept looking at Ettore.

"I asked you," I said. "You want it back from me. Then you can say the number to my face."

He finally turned his head.

"Four hundred thousand. Over two years."

"Paid to who?"

"To the Cardone family."

"There is no Cardone family. There's me, my sister and a seventy-nine-year-old woman in St. George." I folded my arms over the green silk.

"The Varrones held my father's seat in trust. They took everything that came to it. I never saw a dollar. Neither did my grandmother. If you want your money, you're knocking on the wrong door. It's in Dyker Heights."

The underboss's mouth tightened.

"That's convenient."

"It's not. It's insulting." I looked at the men at the bottom of the stairwell, four of them, all watching. "Your men have been off the Staten Island piers for two years. Cosimo saw to that. Am I right?"

Nobody answered, which was an answer.

"I've got a small launch and no crew to spare. I'm running freight and passengers every night with a nineteen-year-old and two dock hands. I'll pay your men to work her. Union rate, cash on Friday, starting tomorrow."

"Sarno men don't work for a Cardone."

"Then they'll keep not working for anybody."

Ettore's arm moved under my hand.

He was trying not to smile.

"What about Red Hook?" the underboss said. "The men want you gone by Sunday."

"Then come out with me tomorrow night," I said. "If you still want me gone after, I'll go."

He looked at Ettore.

"She means it," Ettore said. "I'd go. I'd bring a sweater."

The fog came in the next evening at nine, thick and white off the ocean.
