Chapter 9: The Count

Bai Jin woke in the wrong bed with his boots off, and knew at once what it meant.

The gate hut.

The stove had burned down to a red thread.

Gray light came in under the door.

Gong Ting sat on the floor against the wall with his rifle across his knees, wide awake, looking at him.

"You followed me," said Bai Jin.

"Yes."

"You went down to C," said Bai Jin.

"Yes."

"You stood there," said Bai Jin, and his voice was a stranger's, flat and high, "and watched me count nothing."

Gong Ting said nothing.

"How long?"

"From the first row."

Bai Jin sat up.

His head swam and his stomach turned over, and for one long moment he thought he would be sick on the blanket.

Then the anger arrived, clean and cold, and he was glad of it.

"Get out," he said.

"No."

"I'm your employer. I'm telling you to get out of my hut."

"It's my hut," said Gong Ting. "You're in my bed."

"Then I'll leave." He swung his feet to the floor.

"Take your box of slips and go and sell it to Qi. He'll pay well. He's had my numbers since August."

"It isn't me."

"I thought it was." It came out of him cracked.

"For an hour yesterday I thought it was you. You know where the tins are, and you never spend a slip."

"I'm sorry."

"Good," said Gong Ting. "Thinking is your job."

Bai Jin stared at him.

"That's all?"

"I don't know who the old pencil is." He put the rifle on the bed.
