Chapter 15: Her Own Roof
Anders set his cup down in its saucer without a sound.
"Where will you go?" he asked.
"The yard."
"There's a bunk above the office. The heating's been out since March."
"I know. I've slept up there."
"I could send a man to see to the boiler."
"I'm a man to see to the boiler."
His mouth did something that might have been a smile before it remembered it was in trouble.
"May I carry your bag to the truck?"
I looked at the bag.
I looked at the hand he was holding out, large and careful, palm up.
"You can carry the bag," I said. "Not the toolbox."
He carried the duffel down to the gardener's pickup as if it held glass.
He didn't ask me to stay again, and I noticed that he didn't.
The room over the yard office had one window, one cot, a hot plate and a smell of cold coffee and cutting oil.
The window looked down the gravel slope to the water.
There was frost on the dock boards, and the lake was the color of a nickel.
