Chapter 14: Guardianship
County Courtroom Two held about sixty people, and Friday at nine every seat was taken.
Half the town had come to watch the Penhallows lose their minds.
I recognized the women from the arts center, two of Lorne's yard foremen and a reporter with a notepad.
Dina sat at the petitioner's table in a navy dress, with her hair pinned and her hands folded.
Her lawyer stood beside her, easy and tall.
Our lawyer was the board chair's man, the one who had read the proxy with his glasses on his forehead.
He had slept three hours and drunk four coffees, and he had a cardboard box of papers under his arm.
The judge came in, a gray woman with a face.
"This is a competency petition on two respondents," she said. "Counsel, be brief."
Dina's lawyer was brief and very good.
He told the court that Mr. Penhallow had been unwell for years.
He said Mrs. Penhallow's own history showed an episode last spring and a pattern of injuries she could not explain.
