The regional director arrived at nine sharp on Monday in a quarter-zip pullover and clean white sneakers.

He shook my father's hand with both of his.

He shook mine with one, and looked past me at the ceiling tiles.

"Mr. Haverkamp. Great building. Great bones."

"It floods," said Wim.

"Everything floods."

"This floods in the basement every March."

"That's why we have contractors."

My father lowered himself onto his stool behind the register, with the walker parked beside him.

Bernie stood at the paint counter with her arms crossed and her glasses pushed up in her hair.

I stayed at the end of the nail aisle, where I could see everyone.

Gabe had come in at eight to look at a light fixture.

He was on a stepladder in the garden aisle, and he hadn't changed a bulb in forty minutes.

"We'd like to make this simple," the director said, and set a folder on the counter.

He opened it to a single page.

"We keep the sign, for six months."

"We keep the staff, for a year."

"We take the inventory at cost."

"And we add a seasonal garden center, which this town clearly wants."
