He said, "That's good."
That was all.
I watched the sleet land on his sleeve.
"Good," I repeated.
"It makes sense."
"You've got a store to run."
"Your father needs you, and you're better at it than anyone."
"Of course you'd want to stay."
His voice was warm and even.
It was the voice he used for customers.
"Of course," I said.
"It's a good plan. The firm can do remote work. You've got the apartment. You'd be close to Wim."
"Gabe."
"I'll help in any way I can. I can rewire the second floor. I can fix the basement drain so it stops flooding."
"Gabe."
"Yes?"
"Where are you right now?"
He blinked at me.
"I'm standing on the pier."
"No, you aren't."
I stepped back from his coat, out of the warmth, and the wind hit me in the face.
I could see him doing it.
I had watched it happen, five years ago, across a kitchen window, and I hadn't had a name for it then.
His shoulders had squared.
