Chapter 22: Commencement

Commencement was Saturday morning on the big lawn, under a white tent the size of a circus.

I'd rented the gown for forty dollars. It smelled like somebody else's cologne.

Mom pinned the cap to my hair with six bobby pins and the hex key, for luck.

"You'll lose that key," she said.

"I've never lost it."

"You'll lose it today. I can feel it."

The kid wore a tie for the first time in his life.

Dakota had tied it for him in the parking lot and then cried about it, and he'd let her.

The crew had a whole row near the back. The machinist in a sport coat older than me. The theater kid with a poster board.

My boss came too, in a hat with a feather.

Pierson sat at the end of their row, in a navy suit, beside my mother.

She'd assigned him the seat herself. She said it was so she could keep an eye on him.

Clifford's lawyer had withdrawn the lawsuit on Friday afternoon, without a word to anybody. Pierson found out from the court's website.
