Chapter 16: A Year Late
"Then who else?" I said.
Lachlan only smiled.
The guards walked him out of the Great Hall, and the doors closed behind him.
"Echo," I whispered. "Is he lying?"
She was quiet for so long that I thought she'd gone.
"No," she said at last. "I told you. You're not the first. I never said you were the last."
My mother took me to Dot's on Sunday.
The greasy diner on Route 9. The one she always pretended she hated.
We sat in the red booth by the window, the same one as when I was nine.
She ordered for both of us without asking.
Pancakes, bacon crispy, one fried egg on the side, and a chocolate milk she knew I'd pretend was for her.
She'd gotten every item right.
"You remembered."
She reached into her bag and took out a small black notebook with a cracked spine.
She slid it across the table.
I opened it.
It was her handwriting. Page after page.
"R. likes indigo. Hates pink. Wants to learn to ride."
