Chapter 20: Hero Award
Nell's POV
They played the video of the wheel on a huge screen above the dais.
Three hundred people watched me slap the red button in slow motion, and they clapped.
My mother clapped loudest.
The foundation chair read a speech about courage and community. Then she held up a glass plaque and said my name.
I walked to the dais in my green dress.
I could feel Eli at table one without looking. I could feel my mother's smile on the back of my neck.
The plaque was heavier than it looked. I set it on the lectern and put my hand flat beside it.
"Thank you," I said. "I'm going to say something that isn't what you expect."
The room went quiet and pleasant.
"On Labor Day I stopped a ride because I knew it would break. I can't tell you how I knew. A lot of you have asked, and I've said it was the noise."
I looked down at my mother.
"The truth is that I have heard my family decide who matters before. I heard it once on a day that never happened, and I'm not asking you to understand that. I only want you to hear what it sounded like."
My mother's smile held.
"Birdie first," I said. "Nell's tough. She can wait."
Somebody in the back row laughed uncertainly.
"My mother said those words to me last month, on a porch, in front of two neighbors. She said them with her back turned, in a voice that was kind. She has been saying them my whole life, and every time I swallowed it."
