Chapter 18: Garrick's Fall
Saskia's POV
Conrad's riders brought the guard book from the Redmoor barracks in four days, and we rode south with it the morning after.
Garrick walked behind the king's horse in chains, and Cecily walked behind him.
Redmoor's whole pack stood waiting in the yard.
They had heard by now.
The yard was where my mother had stood for three days watching Ashfen burn.
Her grave lay under the old pear tree at the far end, a flat grey stone with no name on it because my father had never paid for the carving.
The Redmoor Beta stood at the foot of the steps with the green ledger open in his arms.
He had kept it for twenty years.
I watched him look at my father, and then I watched him look away.
"Read it," Conrad said.
He did not raise his voice, and the whole yard heard.
The Beta cleared his throat.
"Eleven years ago," he read, "a daughter of the bakers, twenty-two. Not heard."
A woman in the crowd made a sound and covered her mouth.
"Nine years ago, a shepherd's girl, nineteen. Not heard."
The entries went on.
It took a long time, and nobody left.
When the Beta stopped, the guard book was passed to him, and he read from that, too, the captain's small tidy hand and the count of girls he had killed.
At the fortieth name a man in the front row dropped to his knees.
It was a name he knew.
"The Alpha paid us from the offering fund," the Beta read, with his voice breaking. "Four gold marks for each, to the captain, and six to the wolves who walked with him."
