Chapter 19: Ashfen
Ashfen was two days west of Redmoor, and nobody had built anything there in nineteen years.
We came over the last ridge on foot, because Conrad said a king should not ride into this place.
The gate posts still stood.
Beyond them the village was black stumps and fallen roof beams, with grass and young birch coming up through the hearths.
Conrad stopped at the gate and did not go on.
I took his hand, and it was cold.
"I have never come here," he said. "I sent others to count."
"Then count it yourself."
He walked in beside me.
A small group of survivors lived among the ruins.
They had put up lean-tos against the one wall of the old mill that was left, and they stood in a line to watch us come.
Most of them were old.
One was a boy of about seven who held a goat by a rope and stared at Conrad's face.
"That's him," an old man said.
He leaned on a stick, and his left arm ended at the elbow.
He did not shout it.
He said it as a plain fact, and it was worse.
"I'm Ashfen's blood," I said. "My mother was born in this village, and I've come here to-"
"We know who you are," said a woman at the end of the line.
She was small and bent, with iron hair in a thick braid.
"You have your mother's chin. We heard you stood up in the king's hall and told them where you came from."
The old man spat on the ground at Conrad's feet.
Conrad did not move.
"Sixty of us walked out of the smoke," the man said. "We carried what we could, and we buried the rest in the orchard because we couldn't get to the burying ground."
