Chapter 20: The Seat

The harvest oaths were sworn on the full moon, in the Hall of Moons, with every window thrown open.

One chair in the half circle stood empty.

The Alpha who had owned it had ridden out in the night without his guard book, and Conrad's wolves had let him go.

"He'll come back or he won't," Conrad had said. "Either way he's counted."

Seven Alphas stood in front of their chairs.

Jonas stood at the end in Redmoor green, with the signet ring on his finger and his chin up.

He had not looked away from me once since we came in.

Hazel had dressed me again.

This time the gown was black, with the neckline cut low, because I had asked her not to hide the mark.

"No more cutting down the old queen's things," she said, with her mouth full of pins. "I took your measure last week, and I've been up half the night."

"You knew I'd say yes."

"I knew before you did."

The black chair had been rebuilt from the splinters.

It sat on its step, and beside it, on the left, was a second chair that had been brought from the east wing.

It was carved oak, dark with age, with a back as tall as mine.

It had been made up for a queen forty years ago, and she had never come.

Conrad stood at the foot of the step with no mask and no coat, only a plain black shirt.

I stood beside him with the dagger at my hip.

"Alphas of the north," he said. "I came to the harvest oaths for a hundred years believing I was the thing you feared."

Nobody moved.

"You were afraid of me because I gave you reason. Some of you did terrible things because of it. That is on me, and I will say it every year until I die."
