Chapter 12: The Locked Drawer
Garazi told it in the kitchen at ten at night, with a candle on the table and both of us in dry clothes, our hair wet.
She did not tell it kindly.
"My husband never lent your father one dollar," she said.
She laid a tin box on the table.
It was a Christmas cookie tin, red and gold, with a dented lid.
"He was a hard man.
"He did not lend to friends, and your father was his friend.
"He sold your father hay on thirty days, the way he sold everyone.
"Your father paid him every thirty days for eighteen years."
She opened the tin.
Inside lay a few papers folded in thirds, brown at the creases.
"The year your mother died," she said, "a letter came.
"It was typed.
"It said the Iriondo company owed the Etxeberria freight line four million dollars, on a note your father had signed.
"My husband was already sick.
"He did not read it twice.
"He told Ximun, it is a clerk's error, they will correct it."
