Chapter 32: Under the Cranes
They held the wedding on the terminal apron, at the foot of the biggest crane, on the last Saturday of November.
Clarice had wanted the Oglethorpe Club.
Opal had wanted the union hall.
I said the apron, between the cranes, because it was the one place in Savannah that every person I loved had spent their working life.
She told me I was out of my mind and then called the port authority herself.
By noon the container stacks had been cleared back thirty yards.
Longshoremen had hung white bunting on the straddle carriers.
A retired crane operator, who had not climbed anything in six years, had asked to be allowed to light the red lamp on the boom.
Six hundred and twelve folding chairs stood in rows on the concrete, because I had counted, and every one of them had a name taped to the back.
Some of the names were of men who had died.
Their widows sat in their places.
