Chapter 17: The Senior Partner

The senior partner's office was on the ninth floor, with a window over the river and an enormous desk.

I had delivered his mail there for three years.

I had never once sat down in that room.

At eight o'clock on Monday I sat in the chair in front of his desk, in my navy cardigan, with my hands folded in my lap.

Alexander took the chair beside me.

The senior partner didn't greet either of us.

He stood at the window with his back to the room, in a gray cardigan.

"Ms. Harlan," he said, without turning. "I was sorry to hear about your father."

"Thank you."

"I'm told it's been a difficult two weeks."

"It has."

"I'm told you've been," he said, and finally faced me, "unwell."

I let the silence stand a moment.

"Lenora Fitch said that to you," I said.

His brows rose.

"Ms. Fitch is concerned for you."

"Ms. Fitch is wearing my engagement ring."

Alexander made a sound that was nearly a cough.

The senior partner took the chair behind the desk and put his fingertips together.

"You refused a public proposal in front of sixty colleagues," he said. "People tell me you look past them on the elevator. I have to think of the firm."

"I took off my ring at my father's funeral. Nobody has asked me what I saw there."

"What did you see?"
