Chapter 32: The Rest of It
He asked it on the nineteenth of September, on my grandmother's quay, at four o'clock in the afternoon.
I didn't know he was going to.
I thought I was opening a warehouse.
The new roof had gone on in August.
It was pale gray steel, and it still smelled of paint when the sun was on it.
The foreman had hung a flag over the loading doors, and his wife had baked cassata for two hundred people.
Everybody came.
The morning shift, and the night shift, and their sons.
Their wives with folding chairs. Their children with ice cream, running between the bollards.
The watchman, whose eyebrows had grown back thicker than before.
My mother came at three.
She wore her pearls.
She stood at the end of the quay for a minute before she walked down it.
Then she brought me a plate of almond biscuits she'd baked herself.
She'd never baked anything in her life.
They were burned on the bottom.
I ate two.
My father didn't come.
He had sent a note with her, in his slow, careful hand.
The E in my name was a backward three.
He'd practiced it.
Gaetano came too, sober and shaved, and stood by the cold store drinking lemonade.
