Chapter 15: The Last Rack

We ran back into the dining room, and Ruggiero's captain was already at the doors.

Eleven capos were on their feet. The old doorman stood at the foot of the table, leaning on his cane, and he looked angrier than I had seen anyone look.

"I told him to stay in this room," he said.

"The man took a washroom," Fabrizio said. He was still in his chair, with his legs crossed. "He's a frightened old doctor. He may be hiding in a cupboard."

"Then you won't mind if we look," Ruggiero said.

"Look all you like. It's my house, too."

My father said nothing. He sat at the head of his table with his eyes on the cloth.

Fabrizio smiled at me.

It was a patient smile, and it told me everything.

He was not worried, because he knew where the doctor was going, and he knew who would be there first.

I looked at the doctor's empty place by the wall.

The number over his head had read 57. It had matched his age exactly.

In my whole life I had seen that only once before, on my sister, on the cobblestones.

It meant today.

"Ruggiero," I said. "He's going to die in this house tonight."

"Where?"

"I don't know yet."

"Then find out."

He said it flatly, and I understood he was handing me the lead.

I walked out of the dining room with half a dozen of his men behind me.

I did what I had never done on purpose. I read every head I passed.

A butler stood in the front hall with a number in the seventies. A maid had one in the eighties. Two Albertini guards by the stairs had numbers far above their ages.
