Chapter 15: The File

Luca's POV

I walked out of my sister's house with my jaw so tight my teeth ached.

Audrey stood on the sidewalk under the streetlamp in a thin dress, with her arms at her sides.

She did not cry, and she did not argue.

She held out a thick manila folder to Teo through the open car window.

"Give it to him," she said. "When he's ready."

Then she turned and walked down Shore Road, away from us, with her back straight.

I let her go.

I got into the back seat and shut the door, and Teo drove two blocks and stopped under a bridge.

"Boss."

"Drive."

"Boss, I need you to listen to something."

"I said drive."

"Four minutes," Teo said. "Then you can shoot me. You can shoot me twice."

He took out his phone and pressed it.

My lawyer's voice came out of the speaker, smooth and pleased, and it said my sister's name.

I heard the rest of it with my eyes on the back of Teo's head.

When it ended, Teo stopped the recording.

"She sent it to me from the back seat, on the way to your sister's," he said. "She ran there to stop your spoon, boss. That's all she did."

"Giulia cried at the funeral harder than I did."

"I know."

"She held my hand."

"I know that too."

I held out my hand for the folder.
