Chapter 6: The Boardroom
"Yes," Margaux said. "Dr. Villard was my grandfather."
The assistant looked at the ceiling and shut his eyes in relief.
Julien Aubrac did not move.
"My grandmother is eighty-four," he said. "Her heart is failing and her hands shake. Your grandfather's needles were the only thing that ever steadied her."
His voice was low, and he took a little extra time over every word.
"We have searched for his family for two years," he said. "We looked for a doctor. No one told us to look for a woman in a lab coat."
"Because I'm not on any list of doctors," Margaux said. "I'm a pharmacist."
"You have his hands," Julien said. "I would like to see them work."
The lift stopped on the top floor.
Thibault stepped in behind them at the last second, a little out of breath.
"Julien," he said, with his best smile. "I see you've met my wife."
The assistant stopped smiling.
Margaux let the word sit.
They walked into the boardroom together.
Eight board members were already seated around the long table, and a deputy director stood at the end with a tablet.
Julien was there to sign a supply contract with Marceau Pharma, and he took the chair at the head of the table without being asked.
Margaux sat on the far side.
She had not been invited, and nobody told her to leave.
Julien signed the first page and slid the pen away.
"Before we finish, a question," he said, looking at Thibault. "Who is the lead scientist behind your three chronic-illness treatments?"
