Chapter 18: Gia

Tullio called Rocco's phone before we reached the car.

Rocco put him on speaker and held it between us.

"Brother," Tullio said, and he sounded sad. "I didn't want it to come to this."

"Where is she?"

"Safe. Eating. She's always been fussy about food."

"Tullio."

"Bring me Father's hair and the lab papers and come to my restaurant on Van Brunt Street. Bring the doctor too. I'd like to see her hands."

The line went dead.

Rocco's face didn't change, but the phone cracked in his fist.

"He wants the proof," I said.

"He wants all of us in one room."

"Then give him what he wants."

He turned his head.

"Rocco, he's going to kill your sister if you go alone, and he's going to kill her if you go with an army." I put my hand on his arm. "Take me. I'm the only thing he wants more than the hair."

"No."

"He asked for me by name."

"Because he wants to put a bullet in you where I can see it."

"Then watch me," I said. "And bring a first-aid kit."

The restaurant was dark except for a lamp in the kitchen window.

Rocco went in the front door with the envelope in his hand.

I went behind him with a canvas bag from the trunk, and six of his best men fanned out along the alley.

Tullio sat at a round table in the middle of the empty dining room, with a glass of red wine at his elbow.

Gia sat across from him with her wrists tied to the chair and her glasses crooked on their cord.

A man stood behind her with a pistol against the back of her neck.

"There she is," Tullio said warmly. "Dr. Winslow. Come, sit. You look cold."

"Let her go," Rocco said.

"The envelope first."

Rocco didn't move.

"Gia," Tullio said. "Tell your brother what I told you in the car."
