Chapter 20: Old Hospital

The letter from the hospital came by courier on Wednesday morning.

It was three lines long, on the old letterhead I had once been proud to see my name under.

The board had reviewed new evidence.

It would withdraw its finding against Dr. Ada Winslow in open session on Thursday at ten, in the surgical amphitheater.

I was invited to attend.

I read it standing at the study window, and my hands began to shake for the second time that week.

"You don't have to go," Rocco said.

"Yes, I do."

"Carson's out there with a gun."

"Then I'll go with your guards." I folded the letter along its creases. "I've been walking into that building in my head for four years. I'm not going to hear it read to me over the phone."

He looked at me a long moment.

"Then I go in with you."

"Rocco, you'll stand out."

"I'll wear a gray suit and sit at the back."

"You'll look like a mafia don in a gray suit."

"Yes," he said gravely. "That's the best I can do."

I laughed, and the shaking eased.

On Thursday the amphitheater was full.

It was a round room with tiers of seats rising to a gallery at the top, built for students to watch surgeons work.

I had stood on that floor at thirty, with a patient on the table and a hundred eyes on my hands.

Now I stood on it in a borrowed black dress, with nobody on the table at all.

Rocco sat in the back row of the gallery, in a gray suit, with two of his men on either side.

Gia sat three seats down, and Daphne beside her with a lawyer.

The board chair stood at the lectern in a dark suit.
