Chapter 5: Banana Bread
Gus did not sit on my face.
He sat on my feet all night, which Dani said in the morning was a compliment.
The doorbell rang at five past eight on Saturday, and I was still on her couch in one of her old Missouri State T-shirts.
My mother's ring was on my right thumb, because it was the only finger it would stay on.
Dani went to the door in a sleep shirt that said I'D RATHER BE ROLLING CREDITS.
"Mrs. Carroway," she said.
"Dani Judd." My mother-in-law stood on the landing in a cardigan, in August, with a loaf of banana bread wrapped in foil. "I remember you from the wedding. You gave a toast."
"It had a joke in it."
"It had a lot of jokes."
Marilyn Carroway is sixty-seven and has never once raised her voice at a family gathering.
She walked past Dani and set the bread on the coffee table.
"Elizabeth," she said.
"Marilyn."
"Todd called me at midnight. He was crying."
"I bet."
"He told me everything, and I wanted to come and say it to your face, because I think that's more respectful than a phone call."
She folded her hands.
"It was a work event. Delmar had some of the Foxes people out for a team-building night, and that girl is a colleague, and the kiss cam is just a silly gag where everyone's supposed to kiss."
I said nothing.
"It got filmed," Marilyn went on, "and you took it very hard, which I understand."
"Did he say how hard?"
"He said you've had a spell since your mother. That you've been sad for a long time and he's been worried sick." Her eyes filled. "I'm not angry, Elizabeth. I want to help."
