Chapter 14: Run of Show

The replay booth sat above the last row of the lower bowl, a glass box with six monitors and a smell of burnt coffee.

The man who ran the replay loop met us at the door with a folder and a tired face.

"I'm doing this once," he said. "And I never met either of you."

"Understood," Rhys said.

"Read the last page."

It was a run of show, printed on sponsor letterhead, with times down the left side.

I read it standing up.

At 2:41, Delaney would speak to the arena about her miracle.

At 2:44, Captain Callaghan would join her at center ice and put a hand on her shoulder.

At 2:46, the kiss cam would find Delaney and Colby, with a note in capital letters.

HOLD ON KISS. TEN SECONDS.

At 2:48, Colby would kneel with a ring.

I read that line three times.

Under it was a line I had not expected.

2:50. CLIP: "H.R. LAST SAT." Run the cropped version.

"That's me," I said. "That's the aisle."

"They cut your hand off the frame," the replay guy said. "Just you yelling at a man in a hoodie. Then a caption. It says UNSTABLE."

At the very bottom, in small type, was a note to the ushers.

REMOVE H. RASMUSSEN IF SHE APPROACHES FIELD LEVEL.

I put the page down very carefully.

"She wants me to come," I said. "She wants a scene she can point at."

"She's good," the replay guy said, not happily.

Rhys had gone quiet beside me, reading over my shoulder.

I felt his breath on my ear.

"Whoever hands me the stick on the night owns the cue," the replay guy said. "I don't write the list. I run it."
