Chapter 16: Dinner for Three

Rhys's POV

Delaney let herself into my house at six on Thursday with two grocery bags and her own key.

I was standing in the kitchen in the gray suit, because she had told me to wear it.

She set the bags on the island and looked at me with her head tilted, the way she looked at a shelf she was about to photograph.

"You look tired, baby."

"Long week."

"Poor thing." She kissed my cheek, and I let her.

She smelled the same as she had for four years, like vanilla and something expensive.

I had thought it would feel different now.

It felt like standing in a stranger's kitchen.

She cooked in my kitchen, and I watched her do it.

She turned the overhead lights low and set her phone against the toaster, facing the stove.

I knew that angle.

She hummed.

Once, while she stirred, she looked up at the black window over the sink, and I saw her check her own reflection.

She fixed a strand of hair, and she smiled at herself, and then she smiled at me.

I thought of Hallie in the pink light of an arena screen, watching a woman on it check herself too.

It had taken her one slow watching of a tape to see what I had missed in four years.

"You're quiet," Delaney said.

"I'm listening."

"Good. I need you steady on Saturday." She wiped her hands. "The team will want a statement from you."

She slid a single page across the island.

It was on her sponsor's letterhead, and it was short.
